Meet The Team

Bill Long

Founder & CEO

With a distinguished career spanning over two decades in the US Army and law enforcement, Bill brings a wealth of real-world experience to the personal defense training arena. Since enlisting in the US Army in 1996, Bill has been at the forefront of tactical and defense training, both in the military and civilian spheres.

As a Military Police Soldier, Bill developed expertise in a variety of weapon systems, including handguns, shotguns, and rifles. This skill set was further honed through combat experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, where the realities of high-stress, violent encounters were a constant presence. A notable achievement was in 2003, while with the 101st Airborne Division in Northern Iraq, Bill was instrumental in setting up Iraq's first Border Patrol Academy in Zakho. Here, he not only recruited but also designed and led training for the initial batch of the Iraqi Border Patrol, collaborating closely with the Kurdish Peshmerga Special Forces.

Transitioning to the Army National Guard, Bill joined the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department in 2006. His rapid progression to a field training officer and a key member of the department's emergency services unit highlights his leadership and tactical prowess. In 2008, he played a pivotal role in standardizing operational procedures for the unit and showcased his competitive edge by winning the Michiana SWAT Challenge in handgun and precision rifle divisions.

Since 2013, Bill has been serving actively with the Michigan Army National Guard, while continuing his academic pursuits. Holding a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and a Master's in Management, Strategy, and Leadership, he is also an Executive MBA candidate at the University of Notre Dame, with a projected graduation in May 2025.

Bill aims to demystify personal defense, moving away from Hollywood dramatizations to focus on practical, real-world tactics. His approach is grounded in the belief that while violent encounters are often swift and unpredictable, average civilians can effectively defend themselves and their families with the right training and mindset.

Tony LoBretto

VP of Training and Lead Instructor

Tony LoBretto is a seasoned veteran with over two decades of dedicated military service, boasting a diverse background in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the Michigan Army National Guard. Throughout his illustrious career, Tony has excelled in various roles, showcasing his unwavering commitment and expertise in the realm of firearms and marksmanship.

With a remarkable track record, Tony has earned the prestigious title of "Governor's 20," a recognition bestowed upon Michigan's elite marksmen. His outstanding shooting abilities are a testament to his skill and dedication in the field. Tony also completed the Army Small Arms Weapons Expert Course, becoming familiar with various weapons in use throughout the world.
Furthermore, Tony LoBretto is an avid 3-gun competitor, where high-stress problem-solving is paramount. His participation in these challenging competitions not only demonstrates his exceptional marksmanship but also his ability to think quickly and strategically under pressure.

As a key figure within Griffin Defense, Tony leverages his extensive military experience, award-winning marksmanship, and competitive edge to provide top-tier firearms training services. With him at the helm, clients can expect a comprehensive and expert approach to firearms education and self-defense.

Troy Ciesiolka

VP of Operations and Instructor

Troy Ciesiolka is a multifaceted professional with a rich background in law enforcement and emergency response. As a former military policeman in the Indiana Army National Guard, Troy honed his skills in law and order operations, culminating in a deployment to Baghdad, Iraq, in 2011.
Today, Troy serves as a dedicated firefighter in Michigan, bringing his experience and commitment to saving lives in high-pressure situations. Drawing from his military and firefighting background, he has assisted in the development of a firearms training company that specializes in armed self-defense, medical first response, and the responsible use of less-lethal force. With his extensive knowledge and expertise, Troy is dedicated to empowering individuals with the skills and confidence needed to navigate critical situations effectively.
